Science
At Gracefield School, Science is taught mainly through topic based learning.
There is a detailed subject plan from Reception to Year 6 to ensure that the programmes of study for Science are fully addressed.
Each year the children will work on these themes:
- Life Processes and Living Things
- Materials and their Properties
- Physical Processes
- Experimental and Investigative Science
Children will be encouraged to learn the skills and processes of science; to ask questions; to communicate and share ideas; and to understand scientific concepts.
Science is about...
- observing, looking for patterns
- predicting
- estimating
- communicating
- problem solving
- investigating
Sex and Relationship Education is taught to all pupils as part of the Science programme. In Years Reception, 1 and 2 children will study themselves, looking at the similarities and differences between individuals. In Years 3 and 4 this theme will be developed to include the function of the major organs and a study of plants and animals in life processes. This will be extended in Year 5 and 6 to cover work on health, hygiene, growth and reproduction. The BBC sex education programmes are used and parents are welcome to view the video and discuss any issues with teachers.
